Dao woman breathes new life into traditional embroidery

Monday, February 10, 2025 | 19:46:28

-While maintaining her ethnic group’s traditional craft of embroidering and sewing, Tan My Xuan, a Dao woman from mountainous Lai Chau province, has modified the traditional costumes of her group. Her modernized costumes have been welcomed by Dao people and have created job opportunities for other local women.

The attire of Dao Khau women is modified but still retains traditional beauty.

Traditional Dao clothing is handmade and takes a lot of time to complete. A Dao woman’s outfit is intricately embroidered with elaborate patterns, decorated with silver buttons on the front, and adorned with beads interwoven in floral motifs on the belt. It takes at least six months to finish a single outfit, Tan My Xuan said.

"I was taught by my grandmother and mother at a young age how to make our traditional costumes. Creating an outfit demands a lot of time and meticulous effort, but the current market price isn’t high enough to compensate for the labor involved," said Xuan.

As the demand for traditional clothing for cultural and art performances is increasing, Xuan has decided to expand embroidery and sewing of traditional Dao garments in her hometown.“I’ve long nurtured this idea because of my passion for our traditional clothing and embroidery. My goal is to get the ethnic community involved in preserving our cultural heritage while bringing these products to a broader market to earn more income for myself and other Dao women," said Xuan.

Xuan buys woven fabrics from local artisans, then turns them into modern versions of traditional clothing. To shorten the production time, she formed a team of embroiderers. Some make headscarves, some embroider trousers, and others sew blouses. The finished products retain the essential elements of traditional Dao clothing and preserve ancient motifs while incorporating practical modern features.“In the past, making Dao traditional clothing required a lot of time and effort. The modern versions are more comfortable and convenient. A traditional outfit used to cost more than 400 USD, but the modern versions are more affordable—only about 120 USD per outfit," saidCheo My Lu, a Lai Chau resident.

The wedding attires of Dao Khau brides and grooms are modernized to be both beautiful and practical. The bride's veil is redesigned in a vibrant red, adding to its brilliance.

Xuan’s embroidery and sewing business provides stable employment for five women, who earn a monthly salary of around 200 USD. Tan Phan May, another Lai Chau resident, is happy that she is contributing to the preservation of the embroidery craft.

"I believe preserving cultural values isn’t very difficult. We just need to retain what is suitable for the present while letting go of outdated and impractical elements. Xuan has made a tremendous effort to design these modernized Dao outfits. We’ll continue to create new products to meet customer tastes, and hope our work will be recognized by more people. We want to earn an income while preserving our traditional embroidery craft," said May.
